Responsible Innovation for the World

ACTIVITIES

Together with the Maya Foundation, João Melo, Leonard Leiner and Linde Soontiëns, I designed and built a biogas system that would be an improvement compared to their current used biogas systems. The goal of this prototype was to make a less resource-intensive and more accessible biogas plant than the cement fixed-dome biogas plant that is currently being used in a Nepalese village called Serachour.

We designed and build this biogas system. It is made of HDPE. This material has the properties that make it able to make a biogas plant with a leakage close to 0%. So although the material’s CO2 footprint is higher, because the leakage is minimalized, the total footprint is approximately half as much as the Maya Foundation their cement biogas systems.

REFLECTION

In the Responsible Innovation for the World (RIfW) program, I learned to effectively engage with organizations, work in multidisciplinary teams, think critically, conduct research, and recognize the importance of context. This involved understanding and aligning with the needs of organizations, collaborating with team members that have diverse backgrounds, questioning assumptions, conducting thorough research, and considering the cultural and environmental context. Overall, RIfW enhanced my abilities in responsible innovation.
